It becomes challenging to identify patterns, trends, or correlations that could inform deeper decision-making. Take Note of the Neutral Area
On a further note, the VSM aims primarily at measuring attitudes toward the structures of work organization. Such attitudes can only represent a small subset of what is usually considered cultural values. Yet our samples were, on average, relatively young and thus might have had little work experience so far. Although this confers the advantage of easier comparison between countries, much like Hofstede’s own sample of IBM employees, it also raises questions about generalizability of findings to, say, rural subcultures. Because cultural variability within countries is potentially large, the use of country averages to compare “national cultures” may simply not live up to the social reality that is intended to be measured. As argued above, for cross-country comparisons, homogenous samples may be preferable (Hofstede, 1980, 2002).
Consequences of Population Distribution
Descriptive statistics, such as means and standard deviations, have unclear meanings when applied to Likert scale responses. 3 Furthermore, if responses are clustered at the high and low extremes, the mean may appear to be the neutral or middle response, but this may not fairly characterize the data. This clustering of extremes is common, for example, in trainee evaluations of experiences that may be very popular with one group and perceived as unnecessary by others (eg, an epidemiology course in medical school). Other non-normal distributions of response data can similarly result in a mean score that is not a helpful measure of the data’s central tendency.
Correlations
Time scale analysis of time series data most directly addresses the idea that time series data represent a mixture of variation at different time scales. Frequency-based methods of analysis are designed to separate out the variation at those different time scales and to examine which scales are “interesting” in a given context. Critical to the idea of time scale analysis is Parseval’s theorem which says, roughly, that the total variation in a time series is equal to the Line code sum of the variation across all time scales. The ordinal scale is the 2nd level of measurement that reports the ordering and ranking of data without establishing the degree of variation between them. Ordinal represents the “order.” Ordinal data is known as qualitative data or categorical data.
